Weekend Roundup: SHOPPING!

March 26, 2009

Starting tomorrow and running through Sunday is the twice-yearly LA Kids Consignment Sale! Held at a huge indoor space, City-Art, near the Van Nuys airport, the sale offers everything you ever dreamed of for your kids at drastically reduced prices.  Items are secondhand or never used, and all are checked for quality.  Set aside a good chunk of time to visit, though - it's not something that you can just pop in and out of.  Good luck and happy shopping!

On Saturday, don't miss the next Faery Hunt at O'Melveny Park in Granada Hills!

Also on Saturday, The Getty Center will hold a Family Festival from 10am to 6pm.  "Discover the rich culture of Japan in this full-day interactive festival inspired by the exhibition Tales in Sprinkled Gold: Japanese Lacquer for European Collectors. Try your hand at the workshops, enjoy the music and dance ensembles, the taiko drumming and crafts demonstrations, and get carried away by our master storytellers."

And at Storyopolis, there will be a free performance by Corey Leland for young children.

Sunday, head on down to the hipper than hip Dragonfly DuLou in Los Feliz for an April Fool celebration with a musical show called "Twinkle Time!"

Carnival!

If you drive through Woodland Hills to Calabasas or vice versa, you have probably seen the giant CARNIVAL sign on the north side of the freeway, not to mention the rides and game booths.  There is a new semi-permanent carnival at this site which during the holiday seasons is either a pumpkin patch or a Christmas tree "farm."  It is open Friday through Sunday, and beckons to the passerby.  On Ventura Blvd. west of the Topanga Canyon exit.

Free Museum Admission with Bank of America Account

This is the weekend to check out some museums in the area that are part of the BofA free weekend promotion.  For us those are LACMA and the Autry Museum.  See the website for details.

Pasadena Farmer's Market

Word has it this farmer's market is great for kids, with play structures at the park near by and early stone fruit samples coming out this weekend.  Snacks and a playground all in one!  Saturday from 8:30 to 12:30.

The Return of Music Monday: Dan Zanes Tickets!

March 02, 2009

You probably remember the first time you heard it too: that kicky spot on Sesame Street where Dan Zanes plays his ukelele and attracts all the happy people to his stoop and they sing and dance to "Jump Up" and everyone smiles and your kids like the music and you find yourself singing the tune all day.  And then it bugs you so much that you fire up the DVR to watch it again and eventually you're at the computer Googling the lyrics to find the song and download it or order the CD.

Or maybe you got it as a shower gift or another mom turned you onto it, but either way, nobody can escape the Zanes.  Churning out the standby tunes that are the epitome of Kids' Music That Doesn't Suck, Dan Zanes is like the king of hipster parents.  And guess what - he's coming our way!

In three shows over the March 14-15 weekend, Zanes and friends will perform at UCLA.  Tickets can be purchased here, or they can be WON HERE!

THIS IS HOW YOU CAN WIN:

1.  Send an email with the subject line "Dan Zanes giveway San Fernando" to giveaways@savvysource.com

2.  Include which TWO of the three showtimes you'd most like to attend

3.  Make sure your contact email or phone are correct

Winner will be chosen at random by March 10, and tickets to the selected show will be made available for the winner at will call.

Rain, Rain, Go Away

February 06, 2009

I've lived in Southern California for 13 years now and it never fails: we get a billion sunny days in a row and the one day it rains, I get the blues. I hate the rain. That's one of the reasons I moved here. I do like when it rains at night, playing a soft lullaby of drops on the elephant ear plant that grows outside my bedroom window. But then I want it to  Read more...

Weekend Roundup

July 18, 2008

Here we are smack in the middle of summer. This is one of those weekends that you can pick to sit around and do nothing: practice setting up the tent in the backyard, make some popsicles, take a long walk on the beach. If you do feel like saddling up the kids and going out, here are some more lovely outdoor activities happening in the Valley this weekend. Concerts in the Park! Things  Read more...

Mozart, Moby, or Miles: Shaking those bodies

July 14, 2008

The most amusing thing about my children listening to music is the way they react physically: it's as if their bodies are little tuning forks, vibrating from head to toe with the joy of hearing a favorite song or discovering a new one. They dance to everything from the music on those maddening plastic toys to Yo Yo Ma. That's why I long to expose them to the pleasures of dance instruction.  Read more...

Back To Our Regularly Scheduled Programming

July 11, 2008

Boy, the time flies, doesn't it? The 4 th of July is past, the super giant heatwave is over (at least, temporarily), and another weekend is upon us. There are a lot of events taking place this weekend, so close your eyes, spin around three times, and poke the screen. Wherever your finger lands, attend the closest event. Creating Memories: Where To See Fireworks On Independence Day

July 03, 2008

I grew up in a beach town on the East Coast, where the 4 th of July fireworks show was easily reached on foot, and it was safe to walk home at night. My kids don't have that luxury, living an hour's drive away from the nearest beach. Luckily, everyone loves a great fireworks show, so there are many opportunities to see one closer to home (and therefore closer to bedtime) for your  Read more...

Mozart, Moby, or Miles: Concerts in the Park

May 30, 2008

People who live elsewhere used to make fun of me for never having a tan because they think it's summer all year long. The truth is we do have seasons in Los Angeles: Hot Summer, and The Rest of the Year. There are great things about summer in L.A., though, and one of them is the tradition of outdoor events. Especially the free ones. Valley Cultural Center puts on free concerts in Warner Center  Read more...
