Carnival!

If you drive through Woodland Hills to Calabasas or vice versa, you have probably seen the giant CARNIVAL sign on the north side of the freeway, not to mention the rides and game booths.  There is a new semi-permanent carnival at this site which during the holiday seasons is either a pumpkin patch or a Christmas tree "farm."  It is open Friday through Sunday, and beckons to the passerby.  On Ventura Blvd. west of the Topanga Canyon exit.

Free Museum Admission with Bank of America Account

This is the weekend to check out some museums in the area that are part of the BofA free weekend promotion.  For us those are LACMA and the Autry Museum.  See the website for details.

Pasadena Farmer's Market

Word has it this farmer's market is great for kids, with play structures at the park near by and early stone fruit samples coming out this weekend.  Snacks and a playground all in one!  Saturday from 8:30 to 12:30.

Weekend Roundup - Love and Black Cats

February 13, 2009

Hey savvy parents.  Happy Friday the 13th.  I know, that's not that funny if you're superstitious.  Here's what's cooking in and around the valley:

1.  Nobody has entered the ticket giveaway for the Sesame Street The Body exhibit at Hollywood and Highland.  Being Savvy underwent a platform change last week (it wasn't very painful and is designed to make everything prettier and easier to use) so I'm wondering if you tried to enter but your comments got lost.  I'll give you another chance to comment here or go to the original post and enter.  I'll close the contest Monday night.  Come on, people, get in on this one!  It was so much fun to watch my child learn.  Well, besides the poop part.

2.  Parents' Night Out for Valentine's Day at Fairies and Dragons in Encino.  "It's time for parents to reconnect, so why not leave your little valentines with us for the evening? There will be games, songs, and a special Valentine's Day craft, all lead by our talented and competent Fairy Team.  We'll have pizza for dinner and yummy sweets for your sweets! $15/hour for the first child with a two hour minimum, and $7/hour for each sibling.  Dinner at 6pm, additional $2/child."

3.  Free eats!  Acapulco Restaurants are offering free kids' meals on Saturdays from 10 am - 3pm with accompanying adult.

4.  Don't forget about all the great events held by the Los Angeles Public Library over the coming weeks!

5.  The Skirball isn't just about Noah's Ark.  Weekends bring "Dig It! " - a hands-on archaeological activity for kids of all ages, every Saturday and Sunday.

Give Local Gifts That Keep On Giving

December 16, 2008

Instead of another molded plastic toy from China, why not give your friends' kids a membership to a local activity? It's a gift of memories and time, and the parents will enjoy it too. Better yet, you don't have to go anywhere to buy them, because they can be purchased online. History Lesson: Little Ranch Hands

July 21, 2008

Sometimes it's valuable to show children how to do things the way they were originally meant to be done, and by this I mean without modern technology. In much the same way that a child needs to learn math before they learn how to use a calculator, they should learn how to mow the lawn instead of watching the gardener do it, and now you can show them how people washed clothes before the  Read more...

Escape to the Valley 2: Oh No! We're Still in the Valley!

July 09, 2008

On your second day in the San Fernando Valley, get out of it! Of course there's too much to see in three days, but you might as well cover some ground while you're here. Hop in your car and see the lands north of L.A. the way it was meant to be seen from a car window. Day 2 - Pasadena A 45 minute ride on the 210 east takes you to our neighbor, the San Gabriel Valley.  Read more...

History Lessons: Two By Two at Noah's Ark

May 26, 2008

This year on Kyle's third birthday, his godmother Lisa realized two things: he has more toys than he needs, and we have no room for any more. So she wanted to start a tradition of taking Kyle on a special outing for his birthday, and offered to take him to Disneyland. That would mean a whole day of whiny, just-potty-trained kid at a sensory-overload theme park over an hour away. Lisa  Read more...
