Weekend Roundup 8/8

Weekend Roundup

Traveling with the kids is such a chore, but remember that you are creating memories for them.  It's what you signed up for when you had kids, so you might as well accept that a vacation with them is not actually a vacation for you.  I learned that lesson again when my family went camping last weekend at Pismo Beach.  Read our story here.

For the next few weekends we'll be in Connecticut.  "Summering in Connecticut" as I like to say, even though it's only for most of August.  We'll enjoy the hot sticky weather there, and then come back to Los Angeles to cool off.  It's a dry heat.

While we're away I will continue to highlight activities and ideas for you and your preschoolers.  Here are a few gems for this weekend:

TONIGHT - Thursday August 6
Summer Twilight Thursdays continue at Descanso Gardens in La Canada Flintridge.  An Afro-Brazilian group sings, you recline on a blanket with a picnic dinner, the kids scamper about, chasing butterflies.  It's a pretty picture.

SATURDAY - August 8
Consider taking advantage of Katie's Cooking School's parent's night out.  Drop off at 6:30 - your kids make a yummy treat and get to play, then you pick them up at 10:30.  Everybody wins.

FRIDAY - SUNDAY

Free concerts continue in the evening at Levitt Pavilion in Pasadena

Tomorrow is May Day, which has become a celebration of the beginning of summer.  Traditional celebrations include lots and lots of flowers.  A good craft and way to welcome summer is to make a May Day flower basket and leave it on your neighbor's or friend's doorknob or porch.  Ring the bell and then sneak away, so your friends will get an surprise treat.  Although the custom is to not tell that it's from you, your child will probably be bursting with pride and spill the beans at top volume!

Five Local Spots That Inspire Imagination

October 14, 2008

When the kids and I get home every evening at 5:45, the first thing we do is grab a handful of Otter Pops and head outside. I love to lay back on a blanket in the grass and engage them in a game of "what does that cloud" look like? This only works if there are actually clouds in the sky, which isn't very often. I guess it's a special game because it's rare, but that has inspired me to seek  Read more...

Get Outta Town! A Weekend in Lake Arrowhead

July 24, 2008

Since I'm always going on about staying around town to save money on gas, this is going to sound a little contrary: now is the time to get out of town. Seriously, because of the price of gas, the traffic is amazingly light, even during the Friday getaway. Here's my quick review of a 3-day, 2-night stay in beautiful Lake Arrowhead with both children, ages 3 and 1.  Read more...

Buck Up, Little Camper. We've Got Flush Toilets

July 07, 2008

One of my favorite family activities when I was a little girl was our annual camping trip. I remember well the musty smell of our old canvas tent and how hard it was to assemble once we got to the end of our long road trip and set up our site. We always went to the same campground in Litchfield, CT, but every year we chose a different type of campsite by the lake, in the woods,  Read more...
