Carnival!

If you drive through Woodland Hills to Calabasas or vice versa, you have probably seen the giant CARNIVAL sign on the north side of the freeway, not to mention the rides and game booths.  There is a new semi-permanent carnival at this site which during the holiday seasons is either a pumpkin patch or a Christmas tree "farm."  It is open Friday through Sunday, and beckons to the passerby.  On Ventura Blvd. west of the Topanga Canyon exit.

This is the weekend to check out some museums in the area that are part of the BofA free weekend promotion.  For us those are LACMA and the Autry Museum.  See the website for details.

As in, hold on to them, because there's a lot going on this weekend. Thanks to reader Cari, I have a lot of holiday events to include in this special list: It's snowing in Simi! Every night at 7pm and extra times on weekends, snow falls at the Simi Valley Town Center. They also have roving bands of carolers, balloon artists, and other live entertainment every day. Favorite Local Holiday Traditions

December 02, 2008

Last year when my older son was 2 and a half, it was the first Christmas that he really noticed and responded to. I also had a 7-month-old baby who needed a lot of attention. It was hard for me to keep them both happy (and still is) but Christmas season gave us lots of diversions to make it easier: spectacles to set off questions from the preschooler and stunned quiet awe from the  Read more...

Let's be honest. The Valley is huge. There are a million things to do here. Twenty-six of those things is even too much. So I'm breaking up this alphabetical post into sections, so as not to overwhelm your delicate sensibilities and to-do lists. We'll start off with 8. A: AUTUMN. Learn about how nature prepares for sleeping through the winter at King Gillette Ranch, November 8 . B: BASEBALL,  Read more...

Weekend Roundup: Community Hoe-Down!

'Tis the weekend for community celebrations! Maybe they think it's cooling off, so now is the right time for a big outdoor festival. I guess nobody could have predicted the 100-degree weather when they scheduled so many great events in the Valley this weekend. Put on your sunscreen and a big hat and bring lots of water, because there's plenty to do out there! Friday, Saturday, and  Read more...

Relocating Your Preschooler

September 24, 2008

Often, as families grow, so must the vessel that holds them. Sometimes moving to another house means moving pretty far away from home, where your children know landmarks, rooms, and neighbors and enjoy calling them by name. Moving to a new area with a preschooler is challenging (but what life event isn't more challenging with a preschooler?). Here are some ideas for where to find help:  Read more...

Park Rec Classes Already?: But He's Just a Baby!

June 11, 2008

Somehow, I gave birth to two giant kids. Kyle, now 3, is 40 inches tall and over 40 pounds. People think he's 4. There are mornings when my husband and I look at each other and say Did he get taller overnight Even Brady is 14 months and already over 23 pounds. As Kyle has grown taller, he runs us in circles, so the changes, while not subtle, are easy to overlook in the  Read more...
